If you’re a Scrabble fan you will know that beyond the letters you receive and the words you can make with them, there is also a strategy game.
I have fond memories of playing board games with my partner until 2 or 3am in the morning; just enjoying each other’s company; Sharing good conversation and a challenging game.
And I’m reminded today that life really is like a game of scrabble.
You are dealt a set of letters and as you play the game a plan and strategy becomes apparent. You begin to anticipate what your opponent can play and you base your play based on those factors not merely what will get you the highest score.
Are You Always Going for the Highest Score?
Going for the highest score each time is like being the hare in the story of the Tortoise and the Hare. You can quickly run out of plays and leave openings for your opponent that allow them the advantage.
So it pays to study the board and anticipate your next step while playing your hand.
And sometimes life is better played like that. And yet often we are so focused on what we have in our hand that we don’t see the opportunities on the board.
Can You See Beyond Your Tiles?
You get caught in the ‘now’ of your model of the world unable to look beyond how you read the tiles.
You may have a seven letter word but depending upon you mind-set in the moment you may only see three letters. You may see the obvious word and your mind won’t let you step back and see anything different.
If you Forgot What Your Tiles Were for a Moment, How would That be?
If you place your tiles facedown and then look at the board, the landscape, the environment, the bigger picture; you have the chance to look for the opportunities that are out there irrespective of the tiles you hold in your hand.
You can see the places where you can place an ‘s’ to maximise on a high score word already played.
You can see where and ‘ed’ creates a triple word score or identify the letter that added to the front of a high score word would allow you to leverage your play.
Then picking up your hand again you see that what you thought was a weak, low scoring hand is actually very powerful and that you have more choices than you could have imagined only moments ago.
Put Your Problem Facedown so it’s no longer There – What do You see?
Take some time to put your problems down, to smell the roses, scan the landscape and spend 10 minutes doing and thinking nothing, before going back to that challenging hand you’ve been dealt.
You may surprise yourself by what you see!
