This week I’ve giving processes and tips about looking at areas of your life and business where particular care and attention may be required as the year starts out.
I tend to get tough with myself at this time of year because I don’t want to carry on with things that are not getting me the results I want in my life and my business and sometimes it takes a bit of ‘tough love’ with yourself to really step back and be honest about what you’re avoiding, what you could be putting more effort into and what is stopping you.
The first step in overcoming any issue is acknowledging it’s an issue in the first place. If you are in denial about where you are and what you are doing then there is nothing anyone can do to help you until you move to ‘willing’ to accept and wanting to change where you are.
Are you REALLY willing to face your demons and do what it takes to make this the best year of your life?
Choose the area of your life where you it’s most important to improve and then work through the following exercise. Give yourself a limited time to go through the exercise so that you avoid procrastinating. Just flow with it.
The GROW model.
G is for goal –
here specify the outcome you would like (use SMART goals – I’ll be covering these in videos next week). Be graphic. Make it a compelling vision. Describe how you’d feel when you’ve achieved it. What will you see and hear, taste and smell? Be specific and make it exciting.
So define your vision, your compelling objective, the outcome you would like. What do you want?
R is for Reality –
where are you now? How far away are you from your desired outcome?
So for the area of life you’ve chosen describe the truth of where you are in as much detail as possible, as it is for you now. What is that area like for you right now? Be as detailed, honest and specific as possible. What are your beliefs about the situation? What’s the story you are telling yourself and what are the events?
O is for Obstacles and Options.
What are the obstacles between where you are now and your Goal? There will be obstacles otherwise you would have already achieved your goal. The minute you set a goal there are obstacles. If there weren’t you would have achieved it already. For example if your goal is to travel to Paris. Looking at where you are now, in London, your obstacles are the logistics of how you get to Paris at the specific time you’ve chosen, within the budget you set possibly.
If there were no obstacles then you would already be in Paris.
Be really honest here. Look at the rituals and habits and choices that have you where you are. What choices do you make about your life – even unconsciously – that keep you where you are. For example food – what are the habits and choices around food that mean your body isn’t the way you want it or your energy is low? What are the habits, and thinking around exercise that you maintain to keep you where you are? What are the stories beliefs and excuses that you use to stop you achieving the results you want? What are the patterns? What are the list of habits and thoughts you go through to produce the results you’re getting now? Look in great detail. Be truthful – remember tough love. These are the real obstacles to your results.
this is where you brainstorm the different choices you have. Think out of the box and list as many options as possible. In our Paris example we could fly, swim, go by train, car, bicycle, boat, bus etc.
So what are the options you have to overcome the obstacles to your goal? What are the rituals that need to change? What could you differently from what you’re doing now to achieve your vision? What would you need to do each day to move you toward your goal? What new habits could you create? What different thoughts and attitudes could you adopt?
What beliefs could you choose?
Again be specific and detailed.
W is Way forward – What WILL you do?
Decide what specific actions you are going to take to achieve your goal. Decide what new habits and new rituals you will implement, everyday to reach your goal. Be specific. What time of day, how often? What, where, when, who with and How?
Choose two or three things you can build into your day that will become new habits for achieving the goal and the life that you want.
TAKE THE ACTIONS!
Revisit this exercise when you’re ready to step it up further.
This is the way to go beyond resolutions and create life habits that become automatic and unconscious and get you what you want for your life.
