As we walk through life we all leave footprints, intentionally and unintentionally.
Do you ever consider what you are leaving behind and where and how you are walking through your life?
Learning to Walk
When we learn to walk we do so slowly and with great commitment. We fall, we get up and try again.
We aren’t labelled a failure because we don’t get it right first time and for most of us, we aren’t criticised for the way we walk.
Our first footsteps and footprints are generally celebrated and are marked out as a joyous occasion.
As we get older we become unconscious about how we walk (in the main I believe).
We may also become unconscious about the footprints we leave behind.
Do we leave a memory of joy and celebration or pain and sorrow?
Do we leave deliberate footprints in the lives of those we love or random, thoughtless, sand-kicking experiences?
And Does It Matter?
How often do you consider the impression you leave?
How often do you consider the imprint you have made in someone’s life just through you showing up there?
Do you carry and uplift people and leave good feelings and thoughts in your wake?
Or don’t you really consider this at all?
When I lived in London I used to set myself a daily challenge of encouraging someone (usually a stranger I hadn’t met before) to smile when I met them.
I aimed for between 3 and 5 people per day and in the end the number didn’t matter.
It had an extraordinary effect, with strangers often remarking on how I had cheered their day.
This was my small footprint, the least I could do on my daily commute.
I believe it mattered to those who smiled and it mattered to me because it changed how I viewed London, people and the world.
I’m out of the habit now as many personal challenges later I no longer commute and don’t get out as much as I’d like.
Yet when I do, I do aim to engage and raise that smile, yet I confess I don’t always remember.
Today our footprints extend across the world as we engage online and on mobile daily.
Do you consider your digital footprint?
If your son or your parents were to ‘Google’ you would you be embarrassed and want to hide?
Or are you proud of the footprint you are leaving in the digital space?
How do you engage in that space?
Do you believe there aren’t really people out there and not anyone who counts anyway, so you thoughtlessly trample across the world wide web?
Or do chat and share and make as positive a difference as possible to those you encounter?
5 Smiles Per Day
I am going to be looking to create 5 smiles per day online as well as offline from now on.
And I am reminding myself of the footprint I want to leave behind in every area of my own life.
How do I influence myself on a daily basis?
What impression do I make on my world?
Most importantly what are the footprints I want to remember and which footprints will I allow to influence me?
What will I allow to change the way I walk and where do I want to walk in my lifetime?
How are you walking your journey?
